A Rio de Janeiro court has turned down Vasco da Gama's request for an injunction that would have allowed the club to stage its Copa Sudamericana semifinal against Boca Juniors at the Maracanã, according to ge.
The ruling, reported on Tuesday, keeps Vasco from moving the fixture to the Rio stadium. The decision was covered by several Brazilian outlets, including O Globo and Lance.
The case has drawn wider attention in Brazilian football. ESPN Brasil reported that Flamengo criticized the Public Ministry's backing of Vasco in what local media call the "Maracanã case," with Flamengo asking for what it described as respect for limits.
The Correio Braziliense framed the dispute around São Januário, Vasco's own ground, noting its history as the venue for a Libertadores final and its current status as barred for the Sudamericana semifinal.
Vasco had sought the injunction as it prepares to face the Argentine club in the continental semifinal. With the request denied, the club's attempt to relocate the match to the Maracanã has failed at this stage.
It is not yet clear from the reporting where the match will now be played or whether Vasco will pursue another legal route.
