Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries and UK-based Rolls-Royce have announced a strategic partnership to develop a combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) program, according to Forbes. The plan includes forming a joint venture and establishing an Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India.

The announcement, made on Friday, was confirmed by multiple outlets, including Reuters and The Hindu. The partnership is aimed at producing an indigenous engine for India’s fifth-generation fighter jets, a key goal for the country’s defense self-reliance push.

Forbes reports that the collaboration will see the two companies work together on the design and development of the engine. The Hindu adds that the joint venture will also involve setting up a dedicated facility for aerospace gas turbine work. Rolls-Royce, in its own statement, described the move as a strategic intent to partner on the AMCA program.

The AMCA is a planned twin-engine stealth fighter being developed by India’s Aeronautical Development Agency. Currently, the aircraft is expected to rely on imported engines for its initial variants, but the new partnership is intended to provide a domestic powerplant for later versions.

This is not the first defense-related tie-up for Reliance, which has been expanding its footprint in aerospace and defense manufacturing in recent years. For Rolls-Royce, the deal represents a deeper entry into India’s military aviation market.

What to watch next: Whether the joint venture receives formal regulatory approval and how quickly the new engine complex can move from planning to production.
