The 2026/27 Champions League league phase draw has set up sharply different challenges for Spain’s two biggest clubs, with MARCA analyzing which side came out ahead. Real Madrid will face Arsenal and Bayern Munich in the opening stage, while Barcelona’s slate includes a meeting with Paris Saint-Germain, according to reports from Sky Sports and UEFA.com.
MARCA’s assessment focuses on the relative difficulty of each club’s eight league-phase opponents. The Spanish outlet notes that Real Madrid’s fixtures against Arsenal and Bayern Munich stand out as high-profile tests, while Barcelona’s draw includes PSG, a club that has repeatedly clashed with the Catalan side in recent European campaigns. The comparison comes after UEFA’s official draw on Friday, which assigned all 36 qualified teams their league phase opponents.
The draw also placed Manchester City and Aston Villa against PSG, as Sky Sports reported, adding another layer of intrigue to the English clubs’ schedules. Barca Blaugranes, a fan site, listed the toughest draws of the league phase, though the specific rankings were not detailed in the available summary. FC Barcelona’s own club website highlighted ten takeaways from the draw, signaling that the club’s media team is already framing the narrative around its path.
For Real Madrid, the immediate focus will be on navigating a group that includes two of Europe’s most consistent performers in Arsenal and Bayern. Barcelona, meanwhile, will need to manage the psychological weight of facing PSG, a team that has eliminated them in previous knockout rounds. Neither club can afford early slip-ups, as the league phase format rewards consistency across all eight matches.
What to watch next: how both clubs rotate their squads during the congested winter fixture list, as the league phase runs into January before the knockout rounds begin.
