Gardaí have confirmed that a woman whose body was found at a house in North Bray, Co Wicklow, had died a couple of days before she was discovered, according to the Irish Examiner. The woman has been named as Biddy O'Brien. Her husband, Jamie McGinn, was found dead in the front garden of the same property.
Officers were called to the home at Cois Cairn at around 8am on Wednesday. They found Mr McGinn outside the house and Ms O'Brien in an upstairs bedroom. Mr McGinn had visible injuries, and gardaí are examining whether he took his own life after finding his wife's body.
Why it matters
The case drew significant attention because two people were found dead at a single address and the circumstances were initially unclear. A large investigation was launched to establish how the couple died. Post-mortem results have since clarified the sequence of events, and foul play has been ruled out in both deaths, RTÉ reports.
The background to the case is a family tragedy that shaped both lives. The couple lost two young children in a fire nine years ago, and reporting on the case has linked that loss to the difficulties they later faced.
What the post-mortem examinations showed
The post-mortem results established that Ms O'Brien's death occurred a number of days before the alarm was raised. Tests are now being carried out on blood samples to determine whether she died of a drugs overdose, the Irish Examiner reports.
Garda technical experts have taken away items from the house that could point to drug use so they can be examined. The couple, according to the Irish Examiner, had a long history of drug abuse.
The deaths prompted a major garda response, with investigators working to piece together the timeline before the post-mortems provided their findings.
A family loss that preceded the deaths
Nine years ago, the couple's two young children died in a fire at an apartment block in Clondalkin, West Dublin. The 2017 blaze also killed Ms O'Brien's pregnant cousin, Annmarie O'Brien, and the cousin's two-year-old daughter.
The Irish Independent quoted Ms O'Brien speaking about the lasting effect of losing her children, in which she said she would never be right again. According to the Irish Examiner, the tragedy had a severe impact on the couple, and both went on to develop drug addictions.
In January 2023, gardaí searched the couple's home and found almost 3kg of cocaine along with a small quantity of cannabis in a shed on the property. The case came before Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, where the judge took account of Mr McGinn's bereavement after hearing that the deaths of his children were at the root of his addiction. The court was told he owed a drug debt of €8,000 and was holding the drugs in order to reduce what he owed. He received a reduced sentence of 18 months.
What to watch
Investigators are awaiting the results of the blood sample tests, which will indicate whether drugs played a role in Ms O'Brien's death.
