Police in the Netherlands have launched a search of a lake in Rotterdam for the weapon used in the 2014 killing of Rob Zweekhorst, a mental health director who was shot in what authorities believe was a case of mistaken identity. The renewed search follows a tip about the possible location of the firearm, according to AD.nl.
The operation is taking place in the Ringvaartplas, a body of water in the Rotterdam area. Dutch police confirmed the search in a statement, noting they are looking for a firearm in connection with the case. Local broadcaster Rijnmond reported that the activity in the lake is tied to the investigation into Zweekhorst’s death.
Zweekhorst, who served as a director at a mental health care institution, was killed twelve years ago. The case has long been described as a "vergismoord," a Dutch term for a killing in which the victim was not the intended target. The new tip has given investigators a possible lead on the murder weapon, which has not been recovered until now, AD.nl reports.

The search in the Ringvaartplas is ongoing, with police using specialist equipment to comb the water. Authorities have not said how long the operation is expected to last or whether they have recovered any items so far. The tip that prompted the search appears to be a fresh development in a case that has remained open for over a decade.
The coming days will show whether the search yields the weapon and whether it leads to new arrests in the long-running investigation.
