Poland's Ministry of Foreign Affairs marked the 20th anniversary of the killing of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya with a statement saying she is remembered, according to TVN24. The message was published as the anniversary fell on the same date as a celebration at the Kremlin, Wiadomości Onet reported.
Politkovskaya was shot dead in a lift in Moscow two decades ago, RMF24 reported. WP Wiadomości reported that she was killed on Vladimir Putin's birthday and that the perpetrator fired a further shot after the initial one.
The Polish foreign ministry's message was brief and direct, stating that Politkovskaya is not forgotten, according to TVN24. The statement placed the anniversary alongside the events being held in Moscow that day, Wiadomości Onet reported.
Politkovskaya was a Russian journalist whose work focused on abuses and conflict, and her death became a reference point in discussions about the treatment of reporters in Russia. Twenty years on, the case remains a subject of public commemoration in Poland and elsewhere.
Separately, a United Nations rapporteur said a system of repression aimed at civil society is operating in Russia, Dzieje.pl reported. The assessment was published in the context of the anniversary coverage.
What to watch next: whether Polish officials or international bodies issue further statements on the case, and whether any new official findings about the killing emerge.
