Staff at the seal rehabilitation centre in Pieterburen, in the northern Netherlands, are in tears over the facility's approaching end, De Telegraaf reports. Employees warn that seal pups will run into trouble if the centre closes.

The centre, known in Dutch as the Zeehondencrèche, is facing bankruptcy. According to NU, the closure has also halted crucial research into dying seal pups, cutting off a line of scientific work that depended on the facility.

Donations have begun arriving in response to the crisis. RTL.nl reports that the struggling centre has received thousands of donations, amounting to €150,000 raised so far.

Lenie 't Hart, long associated with the seal shelter and described by RTV Noord as a mother figure to the animals, spoke about the bankruptcy. She said the situation pains her deeply.

The AD has also reported on the threatened disappearance of the Pieterburen shelter, framing the debate around a broader question: that an animal must also be allowed to die.

The material available does not specify a closure date or detail the centre's financial figures beyond the amount donated. What is clear from the Dutch coverage is that the institution's future is in doubt and that its staff and supporters are reacting with alarm.

What to watch next: whether the donations are enough to keep the Pieterburen centre open, and what happens to the seal pups and research if it closes.
