The Philippines' Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) said fuel discounts for public utility vehicles (PUVs) could reach as high as P17 per liter at certain gas stations, according to Manila Bulletin. The announcement follows the rollout of a P12-per-liter discount nationwide, which began on August 15.

The higher discount rate is part of the government's UPLIFT program, which aims to ease the burden of fuel costs on PUV operators and drivers, the Philippine Information Agency reported. The program's expansion to P12 per liter was confirmed by multiple outlets, including the Daily Tribune, which noted the nationwide implementation.

Transport groups had previously planned a strike to protest fuel prices, but they cancelled the action after the government increased the fuel discount subsidy, according to Philstar.com. The LTFRB's statement suggests that some stations may offer an even larger discount than the standard P12 rate, potentially reaching P17 per liter.

The discount applies to PUVs, which include jeepneys, buses, and other public transport vehicles. The program is designed to provide relief to drivers who have struggled with rising fuel costs, which have been a major concern for the transport sector.

The government's move to expand the discount comes amid ongoing efforts to stabilize public transport operations and prevent service disruptions. The cancellation of the planned strike indicates that the increased subsidy has addressed some of the transport groups' immediate concerns.

Observers will be watching whether the higher discount rate at select stations becomes more widespread, and whether the program will be extended beyond its current scope. The LTFRB's announcement suggests that the government is open to further adjustments based on the program's implementation.
