Palmeiras advanced to the Copa do Brasil final by defeating Vasco 5-4 in a penalty shootout at São Januário on Sunday, according to O GLOBO. The match had ended 2-1 in Vasco's favor after regulation time, leaving the tie level at 2-2 on aggregate following Palmeiras' 1-0 win in the first leg in São Paulo.

Palmeiras will face Grêmio in the decider.

Why it matters

The result ends Vasco's bid to reach a second consecutive Copa do Brasil final and sends Palmeiras through after a tie that swung repeatedly across both legs. For Vasco, the exit came at home in front of a packed São Januário, where the club had hoped the crowd could overturn its first-leg deficit. For Palmeiras, the shootout win keeps alive its pursuit of the trophy and sets up a final against Grêmio.

How the shootout unfolded

Vitor Roque took Palmeiras' first penalty and converted. Lezcano stepped up for Vasco and was denied by goalkeeper Carlos Miguel, who dived the right way to make the save.

Gustavo Gómez then scored for Palmeiras, and Thiago Mendes converted for Vasco. Ramon Sosa and Santiago Sosa each found the net for their respective sides, and Andreas and Colidio also scored. Giay's attempt for Vasco was stopped by Léo Jardim. Puma then scored.

In the alternating kicks that followed, Marlon Freitas converted for Palmeiras, while Andrez Gómez missed for Vasco, sealing the visitors' place in the final.

A match that turned twice

Vasco needed to win by two goals to advance in regulation time, or by one to force penalties. The home side opened the scoring through Colidio in the first half after Cuiabano broke down the flank and delivered a cross that Colidio struck first time along the ground.

Palmeiras had threatened before that goal. Flaco López headed against Léo Jardim's crossbar, and John Arias also hit the woodwork as the visitors pressed. The game grew more physical as the half wore on, with Arias involved both as the target of heavy challenges and as the author of them. Palmeiras left the pitch at halftime protesting referee Braulio da Silva Machado's decisions on fouls and 50-50 balls, while Vasco's players went to the dressing room to cheers from the crowd.

Piquerez equalized for Palmeiras with a long-range strike in the 11th minute of the second half. Vasco then moved back in front through Puma Rodríguez, who had come on as a substitute, restoring the 2-1 lead. Brenner also entered for Vasco, and Puma soon had a clear chance inside the area but failed to finish. Deep into stoppage time, the full-back came close to sending Vasco through in normal time with a long-range effort that narrowly missed.

The aggregate stood at 2-2 after the regulation result, sending the tie to penalties.

Team news and build-up

Andrés Gómez returned to Vasco's attack after missing the first leg with pain in his left foot. Palmeiras' coach made no changes from the first leg at the Nubank Parque, keeping Mauricio, Jhon Arias and Flaco López as an attacking trio, with Vitor Roque and Andreas Pereira starting on the bench.

Vasco's players entered the field to the club's anthem, and the crowd marked the occasion with fireworks, smoke and confetti. Despite weekend rain, the São Januário pitch appeared to be in good condition.

Palmeiras now turn to the final against Grêmio.
