The Pakistani Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MOIB) has formally rejected an accusation from the Afghan Taliban administration that weapons are being smuggled from Pakistan into Afghanistan. The denial was reported by Radio Pakistan on Sunday, August 9, 2026.

According to Radio Pakistan, the MOIB described the claim as entirely without merit. The ministry’s statement was echoed by other Pakistani outlets, including Dawn and The Express Tribune, which reported that the government dismissed the allegation as "frivolous" and "baseless."

The dispute follows a period of heightened tension between the two neighbors. In its response, the Pakistani government did not limit itself to a simple denial. A spokesperson for the President of Pakistan, as reported by the Associated Press of Pakistan, used the opportunity to counter-accuse the Afghan Taliban regime of providing safe havens to terrorist groups operating within its borders.

This exchange marks the latest in a series of public disagreements between Islamabad and Kabul over cross-border security. The Taliban administration has previously made similar claims about Pakistani territory being used for smuggling operations, while Pakistan has consistently maintained that it is the Afghan side that fails to control militant activity along the shared border.

The Pakistani government’s statement, as covered by Business Recorder, reiterates its position that the smuggling allegation is unfounded and appears designed to deflect attention from Afghanistan's own internal security challenges. Officials in Islamabad have not indicated whether they plan to take any further diplomatic steps in response to the accusation.

What to watch next: Whether the Afghan Taliban administration issues a formal response to Pakistan's counter-allegation, or if the two governments move to de-escalate the rhetoric through direct talks.
