Global oil prices climbed on Monday, August 10, 2026, as uncertainty persisted over a potential US-Iran agreement concerning the Strait of Hormuz, according to 美国之音.

The unresolved negotiations pushed crude prices higher, while stock markets showed mixed results across regions, the outlet reported. The price movement reflects continued market anxiety over the strategic waterway, through which a significant share of the world's oil shipments pass.

Separate reports from Chinese financial media echoed the trend. 新浪财经 noted a notable increase in international oil prices on the same day, while 凤凰网财经 described prices jumping roughly 2 percent, linking the surge to Iran's last-minute demands for substantial compensation from the United States. Jiemian.com added that tensions around the Strait of Hormuz have reignited, with talks between Washington and Tehran still hanging in the balance.

The geopolitical friction also lifted coal prices, with energy-related equities gaining ground. Chinese oil giant CNOOC and coal producer Shaanxi Coal both rose more than 3 percent, according to Jiemian.com, while an energy-focused exchange-traded fund climbed over 2 percent.

However, not all analysts see the rally as sustainable. A separate analysis carried by sohu.com suggested that geopolitical risk premiums are cooling, and that international oil prices are gradually returning to being driven by supply and demand fundamentals rather than conflict headlines.

The situation remains fluid, with the outcome of US-Iran negotiations likely to determine whether oil prices extend their gains or retreat in the coming sessions.
