The provincial health office in Occidental Mindoro is urging parents to have their children vaccinated against measles, according to the Philippine Information Agency. The call comes as part of a broader push to prevent a potential outbreak of the disease in the province.

Health officials are specifically targeting families with young children, emphasizing that immunization is the most effective way to protect them from measles and rubella. The appeal is tied to an ongoing supplemental immunization campaign, which aims to boost coverage rates across the region.

The Philippine Information Agency reports that the province is part of a wider effort in the Mimaropa region, which includes Occidental Mindoro. Regional data cited by the Inquirer shows Mimaropa has reached 50 percent of its measles-rubella vaccination target so far. This suggests that while progress is being made, a significant portion of the eligible population has yet to be vaccinated.

Similar campaigns are underway in other parts of the country. In Calabarzon, the "Ligtas Tigdas" drive has vaccinated close to 600,000 children, according to the Inquirer. SunStar reports that 400,000 children in Central Luzon have also received the measles-rubella vaccine. In Iloilo province, nearly 89,000 children aged 6 to 59 months have been immunized, reaching 51.59 percent coverage on the ninth day of the campaign, as noted in a social media post.

The focus on vaccination reflects concerns about measles outbreaks, which can spread quickly among unvaccinated children. Health authorities are relying on these campaigns to close immunity gaps and prevent the disease from gaining a foothold.

Parents in Occidental Mindoro are being asked to cooperate with local health workers and ensure their children receive the vaccine. The success of the campaign will depend on sustained participation from families across the province in the coming weeks.
