The federal government will offer a discount on petrol sold at NNPC filling stations over the next 30 days, TheCable reported on Thursday, October 8, 2026.

The announcement was carried by several Nigerian outlets at the same time, including Channels Television and Daily Trust, which described the plan as a month-long measure to make fuel cheaper for Nigerians.

Vanguard reported separately that the government has proposed a ceiling of N1,350 for the ex-gantry price of petrol, framing the move as a response to hardship. The ex-gantry price is the cost of fuel as it leaves the depot, before transport and retail margins are added.

The reports follow debate over how to ease the pressure of rising petrol costs. The Whistler Newspaper reported that the World Bank has said Nigeria can soften the effect of higher petrol prices without bringing back subsidies.

The discount is limited to NNPC filling stations and to a 30-day window, according to the reports. No figure for the size of the discount was given in the material available.

What to watch next: the exact discount amount per litre, whether it applies nationwide, and whether other marketers match it or the ex-gantry ceiling is formally adopted.
