China's central authorities have appointed Mo Gaoyi as secretary of the Yunnan Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China, according to Xinhua. Mo takes up the roles of committee member, standing committee member and secretary, while Wang Ning no longer holds those three positions in the province.
The change was announced on Saturday, October 24, at a meeting of Yunnan officials. Hao Junhui, a vice minister of the Central Organization Department, read out the decision at the gathering, Xinhua reported.
According to the report, the central leadership described the reshuffle as a decision made with the broader picture in mind, based on work requirements and the actual state of Yunnan's leadership team, and reached after full consideration and careful study.
Mo was born in December 1964 in Shishou, Hubei province, Xinhua reports. His earlier posts included deputy director of the publicity department of the Guangdong provincial committee, where he also headed the province's external publicity and news offices, and he later led the Southern Newspaper Media Group's management committee. He went on to serve as party secretary of Shaoguan city.
From December 2018, Mo held the post of director of the publicity department of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission at vice-ministerial level, and later served as head of the discipline inspection and supervision team stationed at People's Daily. He subsequently became a member of the Beijing municipal standing committee and head of the city's publicity department, before taking up the role of vice minister of the Central Propaganda Department and director of the State Council Information Office in March 2024.
Watch for further official statements on the transition and Mo's first public engagements in Yunnan.
