Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum has directed the Foreign Ministry (SRE) to summon the United States Ambassador to Mexico, Ron Johnson, and Querétaro Governor Mauricio Kuri, according to Reforma. The order follows Johnson's participation in a ceremony at a police academy in Querétaro, an event Sheinbaum said was arranged without the federal government's knowledge.
Speaking about the incident, Sheinbaum said Kuri did not inform the SRE of the invitation extended to the US ambassador, La Jornada reported. The president questioned the state's security cooperation with the United States, according to El Universal and Yahoo, framing the episode as a breach of the protocol that governs foreign diplomats' activities in the country.
The dispute centers on how a US official came to appear at a state-run police academy without prior notification to Mexico's federal authorities, who manage the country's relationship with foreign governments. El Financiero characterized the episode as a clash between Sheinbaum's administration and the United States over the invitation to Johnson.
The Foreign Ministry has not publicly detailed what the summons will involve or when the parties are expected to appear. What happens next depends on whether the SRE formally calls in the ambassador and the governor, and whether Querétaro's government offers its own account of how the invitation was handled.
