Mexico's Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) has authorized the use of lenacapavir, an injectable drug for HIV prevention that is administered every six months, El Financiero reports. The approval makes Mexico one of the countries where the treatment can be used as pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP. The decision was announced on Thursday, September 24, 2026.

According to El Financiero, lenacapavir is the first HIV prophylaxis in Mexico designed to be given on a semiannual schedule. That dosing interval sets it apart from existing prevention options, which generally require more frequent intake or administration. The outlet describes the drug as a preventive treatment, meaning it is intended for people who do not have HIV to reduce their risk of infection.

The authorization was reported by multiple Mexican outlets, including Gob MX, El Comentario, Aristegui Noticias and Milenio, all of which described the approval as the first six-month injection against HIV cleared in the country. Cofepris is the national regulator responsible for approving medicines and medical devices for the Mexican market.

Details on pricing, availability and distribution timelines were not included in the reporting. It is also not yet clear how the injection will be rolled out through Mexico's public health system or which populations will be prioritized.

What to watch next: whether Mexican health authorities publish guidance on eligibility and access, and when the first doses become available to patients.
