Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has announced a comprehensive strategy to address the sargassum problem along the country's Caribbean coastline, according to EL PAÍS. The plan involves intensified collection efforts, the expansion of containment barriers, and improved management of the macroalgae.

The initiative, reported by Mexican outlet Reforma, carries a budget of 2,600 million pesos, which is roughly $156 million. The announcement was made in coordination with Quintana Roo state authorities, with Governor Mara Lezama expressing appreciation for what she described as unprecedented collaboration between federal and state governments, as reported by the state government.

EL PAÍS reports that the strategy focuses on three main pillars: gathering sargassum from the water and beaches, widening the network of barriers that stop the seaweed before it reaches shore, and developing better protocols for handling the collected material. The plan is part of what officials call the Integral Strategy for Sargassum Attention in the Mexican Caribbean.

The sargassum influx has become a recurring seasonal issue for the region, affecting tourism-dependent beach towns and requiring coordinated responses from multiple levels of government. The New York Times also covered the announcement, noting that Mexico presented the plan as a formal response to the ongoing problem.

While satellite monitoring tools have been used to track sargassum movement in real time, as highlighted by UnoTV, the new funding represents a significant financial commitment to operational measures rather than just observation.

What to watch next: whether the expanded barriers and collection schedule will be in place before the next peak sargassum season arrives.
