Lionel Messi returned to the pitch for Inter Miami on Wednesday, days after the death of his father, according to Página|12. His comeback did not prevent the team's elimination from the Leagues Cup.
The match, reported by Página|12, marked Messi's first appearance since his father passed away. Despite his presence on the field, Inter Miami could not advance in the competition.
Messi's return came after a week marked by emotional contrast, as detailed by TN. The player attended his father's wake and sought refuge with family before rejoining the team. His appearance on the substitutes' bench earlier in the week drew a standing ovation from fans, according to La Nueva Provincia.
During the match, Messi attempted an Olympic goal and shared a moment that drew a smile from him, as Infobae reported. Players from the opposing team, León, greeted him warmly, with coach Gandolfi calling him "the best in history," according to Olé.
The loss ends Inter Miami's run in the Leagues Cup. Messi's return, though brief, showed his commitment to the team during a difficult personal period.
The Argentine star will now shift focus to the remainder of the MLS season with Inter Miami.
