Malaysia's Attorney General's Chambers has filed an appeal against a High Court decision that acquitted a teenager over the fatal stabbing of a schoolmate in Bandar Utama, The Star reports. The appeal was lodged on Thursday, 24 September 2026, according to the outlet.

The case centres on the death of a student at a school in Bandar Utama, a township in the Petaling Jaya area of Selangor. The accused, a fellow student, was cleared at the High Court, a ruling the prosecution is now asking the Court of Appeal to review. Malaysiakini reports that the matter is headed to the Court of Appeal.

Coverage of the case has drawn attention to questions beyond the verdict itself. The Star reports that the judge called for greater understanding of the signs of childhood mental illness after the tragedy. Separately, NST Online reports the court said the boy's acquittal must not diminish the victim's life or the grief of the family.

The appeal means the legal proceedings are not yet closed. No date has been given in the reporting for when the Court of Appeal will hear the matter, and the outcome of the prosecution's challenge remains to be seen.

What to watch next: whether the Court of Appeal schedules a hearing and how it rules on the acquittal.
