Lyon defeated Angers 2-0 at home on Sunday in Ligue 1's ninth round, ending a run of two straight defeats in all competitions without a goal and climbing to third place in the table. Ernest Nuamah scored in the first half and Corentin Tolisso added a second late on, according to RMC Sport. Angers, who RMC Sport reported did not deserve to lose by that margin, sit 15th.
The match may prove to be Paulo Fonseca's final one in charge of Lyon. RMC Sport reported that the coach has been linked with a move to Sporting Portugal, and noted he appeared deeply moved during the celebrations, walking off in tears at full time and greeting each member of his staff individually before heading to the dressing room.
Why it matters
The result steadies Lyon after a difficult spell and puts the club back among the Champions League places. For Angers, a respectable away performance brought no reward, leaving them in the lower half of the table. The bigger question hanging over the evening concerns the dugout: if Fonseca departs for Lisbon, Lyon will have to build on this recovery under a new coach.
How the game unfolded
Lyon led at the interval through Nuamah, who told Ligue 1+ that the win was important and praised the collective performance. "It's an important victory tonight, a very good collective performance," he said. "We take the three points, that's what matters. I'm happy to score."
The second goal came near the end from a corner. RMC Sport reported that Nakamura delivered the set piece to the near post, where Tolisso glanced it past Anthony Lopes, the former Lyon goalkeeper now playing for Angers. Tolisso had earlier forced a save from Lopes with a long-range effort, and he also set up Duranville for a curling attempt that drifted just wide.
Lopes was busy for much of the afternoon. RMC Sport described him denying Nartey from the edge of the area and later rushing out quickly to smother the same player's chance after a fast transition involving Nakamura. The Angers keeper also had a scare when a routine goal kick went straight into trouble; Belkhdim pounced and fed Peter, but Greif — Lyon's keeper — came out to win the duel and cover the mistake.
Angers had their moments. Amine Sbaï beat two defenders with a sharp turn before firing wide, and Boudache curled a left-footed shot from outside the box that missed narrowly. Bacher headed a corner over at the near post, and Bermont shot well off target after finally finding space outside the Lyon area. RMC Sport noted that the visitors were less threatening after the break than before it and struggled to keep possession.
Discipline was a minor theme. Louis Mouton was warned by referee Mr Bollengier for tripping Tagliafico after the Argentine had released the ball, and an Angers defender was booked for pulling back Boudache during a counterattack.
Both coaches made changes. Stéphane Gilli brought off Peter and Belkebla for his first substitutions, while Mouton replaced Van den Boomen, Allevinah came on for Raolisoa and Bermont replaced Sbaï.
After the final whistle, Angers midfielder Haris Belkebla gave a measured assessment to Ligue 1+. "The match came down to a few details, and they were more effective in both boxes," he said. "Big teams make the difference in those details. It didn't go our way. Today we have to say well done to Lyon; we have to keep working and not give up."
What to watch
Attention now turns to Fonseca's future, with RMC Sport's reporting on the Sporting link making his position the story to follow. Lyon's next fixtures will show whether this win marks a genuine turning point or a brief pause in a turbulent season.
