Hospitals in the Lisbon region are still reporting long waiting times in their emergency departments, according to Portuguese public broadcaster RTP. The report, published on Friday, August 14, 2026, indicates that the issue persists despite ongoing efforts to manage patient flow.

The report from RTP highlights that the high wait times are linked to a shortage of available beds and a significant number of patients who remain hospitalised for social reasons—meaning they are medically fit to leave but have nowhere to go. This situation, as noted by Renascença, contributes to bottlenecks that keep emergency departments crowded.

Other Portuguese outlets have also covered the strain on the system. Correio da Manhã reported that emergency services have at times been handling as many as five thousand patients simultaneously. Meanwhile, R7 noted that overall emergency wait times have increased, adding to the pressure on hospital staff and patients alike.

However, the situation is not universally described as a regression. According to Observador, Portugal’s Health Minister has stated that current emergency wait times are actually better than they were two years ago. This suggests that while the system remains under significant stress, there has been some progress compared to previous periods.

The combination of limited bed capacity, social admissions, and high patient volumes continues to test the National Health Service (SNS) in the Lisbon area. The reports indicate that these are structural challenges rather than temporary spikes.

What to watch next: Whether the Health Ministry introduces new measures to address bed shortages and the backlog of social admissions before the autumn, when demand on hospitals typically rises again.
