Eli Lilly and Fortis are urging earlier recognition of Alzheimer's disease as dementia cases rise in India, according to BW Healthcare World. The two organisations made the call around World Alzheimer's Day 2026, which fell on 22 September.

The push comes as doctors flag the need to identify early cognitive changes, Telegraph India reports. India's dementia burden is projected to nearly double by 2036, according to that report.

Separately, experts cited by ET HealthWorld said Alzheimer's cases in India could be up to five times higher than the officially reported number. The Hindu reported that specialists met to discuss specific diagnosis and brain modulation in Alzheimer's care.

World Alzheimer's Day is marked annually on 22 September, according to Vajiram & Ravi, which also published background on the day's theme and history.

Taken together, the reports point to a shared concern among clinicians and companies: that many cases go unrecognised until later stages, when options for care are narrower. Lilly and Fortis framed early recognition as a priority given the projected rise in cases, BW Healthcare World reported.

What to watch next: whether Indian health authorities and clinicians act on calls for broader early screening and diagnosis as the projected 2036 figures approach.
