The 2026 Princess of Asturias Awards reach their central day in Oviedo on Friday, with Princess Leonor taking on a more prominent institutional role, according to Vanitatis. The royal family — King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Leonor and Infanta Sofía — opened the awards programme on Thursday by attending the traditional concert at the Príncipe Felipe Auditorium.

The main ceremony is scheduled for 18:30 at the Campoamor Theatre, where eight awards will be presented. This year's recipients include musician Patti Smith, footballer Leo Messi, animation house Studio Ghibli, novelist Julian Barnes, historian Timothy Garton Ash, astronaut Christina Koch, scientists David Klenerman, Shankar Balasubramanian and Pascal Mayer, and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Why it matters

The awards are one of the most visible dates on the Spanish royal calendar, and this edition puts the heir to the throne at its centre. Vanitatis reports that Leonor will receive the laureates on her own at 12:30 in the Covadonga Hall of the Hotel de la Reconquista — the first time she has done so without her parents. The outlet frames the engagement as another stage in the gradual expansion of her institutional duties as heir.

Coverage from EL PAÍS likewise describes the 2026 edition as bringing new challenges for the princess, while HOLA looked back at Felipe VI's own first solo appearance at the awards four decades earlier, drawing parallels and differences with his daughter's debut.

A day built around the heir

Friday's schedule begins with morning engagements in Oviedo before the afternoon ceremony, Vanitatis reports. The solo audience with the winners at the Hotel de la Reconquista comes roughly six hours before Leonor joins the King, Queen and Infanta Sofía at the Campoamor Theatre.

The concert the previous evening served as the traditional curtain-raiser. Vanitatis describes the 34th edition of the concert as the start of several days of events tied to the awards, and reports that the family returned afterwards to the Hotel de la Reconquista, the venue long associated with the prizes, ahead of a full Friday.

Sombral tones and a sold-out blouse

Fashion coverage from Vanitatis focused on the restrained colour palette chosen for the concert. Leonor wore black, Sofía a dark blue and Letizia a mix of black and bottle green, each following a distinct style: a suit for the princess, a romantic-silhouette dress for the infanta and a cape blouse for the Queen.

According to Vanitatis, Letizia wore a piece from the Elie Saab collaboration with H&M that went on sale on 22 October for 79.95 euros and had already sold out. She paired it with black Sybilla trousers, Magrit shoes and emerald earrings from Tous — the outlet notes this as another example of her habit of mixing luxury labels with more accessible brands.

Sofía's outfit, a dark blue dress by Miphai, drew particular attention, Vanitatis reports. She also wore the Karen Hallam ring associated with Queen Letizia and a chain bearing the Cross of Victory, a symbol of the Principality of Asturias.

Leonor, returning to Oviedo, opted for a black belted jacket and satin-finish palazzo trousers, which Vanitatis describes as a versatile choice softened with silver accessories. These included diamond earrings from her mother's jewellery collection, an ear cuff, a rigid bracelet and her familiar Tiffany & Co. heart pendant.

City caught up in awards fever

The atmosphere in Oviedo ahead of the ceremony was marked by enthusiasm for Messi alongside cheers for the royal family, Vanitatis reported on the eve of the event. The awards bring international figures from culture, science and sport to the Asturian capital for the day.

The ceremony itself is set to begin at 18:30 at the Campoamor Theatre, with the King, Queen, Princess and Infanta all present.
