Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani's father, Mohamed Achani, died on Monday morning at the family's rural home in Bodo Village, Ramisi Ward, Msambweni Sub-County. He was 74.

The governor announced the death in a statement issued the same day, according to The Star, Kenya. She said her father had been in and out of hospital for a period before he developed complications while performing Fajr, the dawn prayer.

He was buried on Monday at 4 pm at the family home in Bodo Village, in line with Islamic traditions, the governor said. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya confirmed the burial arrangements, The Star, Kenya reports.

Why it matters

The death touches one of the coastal county's most prominent families and drew condolences from the top of national politics. President William Ruto sent a message to the governor, and a sitting Cabinet Secretary from the same region also publicly mourned the family patriarch.

It also places a personal loss at the centre of a public week for the governor, who leads Kwale County and announced the death herself rather than leaving it to aides or county communications.

President Ruto and Mvurya send condolences

President Ruto's message, as carried by The Star, Kenya, offered prayers to the governor, her family and the county. He described the period as painful for those affected.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya, who also issued a statement, said his thoughts and prayers were with the family and with the people of Kwale County. He asked for mercy for the deceased and for patience and comfort for the bereaved family, and he confirmed the burial was set for Monday afternoon in Bodo, Ramisi.

The governor's announcement opened with the Islamic phrase used on news of a death, "Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un," before she confirmed her father's passing and his age.

A family patriarch mourned in Bodo

In her statement, the governor asked for forgiveness for her father's shortcomings and prayed that he be granted Jannatul Firdaus, a reference in Islamic teaching to the highest level of paradise. She also asked for strength and patience for the family, relatives and friends.

Mvurya used similar wording in his own message, seeking mercy for the deceased and endurance for those left behind.

The death has brought a stream of condolence messages to the governor and her family, The Star, Kenya reports, as they mourn the loss of their patriarch.

What to watch next: whether the family or county government issues further details on memorial arrangements beyond Monday's burial.
