A series of factory shutdowns is underway in Japan’s Kumamoto region following a major earthquake, according to テレ朝NEWS. Toyota has halted production at three plants in Fukuoka Prefecture, while semiconductor manufacturers including TSMC and Sony Group have also suspended operations, the outlet reports.

The earthquake struck Kumamoto and surrounding areas on Wednesday, triggering immediate safety stoppages across industrial sites. テレ朝NEWS states that multiple companies have ceased operations, with no clear timeline for resumption. The affected Toyota plants are located in Fukuoka, not Kumamoto itself, but the quake’s impact disrupted supply chains and logistics, forcing the automaker to pause output for the rest of the month, according to Sankei Shimbun.

Semiconductor production has been hit hard. TSMC’s and Sony’s chip plants in the region are idle, Sankei reports, and a restart date remains uncertain. Chinese media outlets note that the shutdown could push power semiconductor prices higher, as reported by topics.smt.docomo.ne.jp. Separately, Yamazaki Baking Co. stopped operations at its Kumamoto factory in Uki City, with no restart date set, according to NHK and Kyodo News.

The full extent of the economic disruption is still being assessed. Analysts will be watching for updates on factory inspections and power grid stability in the coming days.
