Nineteen people have died in a stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Chorbagan, Kolkata, according to Anandabazar Patrika. The incident occurred in the festival city on Sunday, 18 October 2026, and the outlet reports that 25 people have been taken to hospital.

Seven people, including organisers of the event, have been arrested in connection with the deaths, according to Ekattor. The reported toll rose during the day, with The Daily Star Bangla also putting the figure at 19 dead and 25 hospitalised.

Anandabazar Patrika reports that political figures Chiranjeet, Rudranil and Kamaleswar have responded to the tragedy. The outlet has separately examined what may have gone wrong, asking whether a microphone announcement triggered the crush, or whether gaps in planning by an "inexperienced" Puja committee and police were to blame.

The Chorbagan incident has drawn attention to crowd management at Kolkata's Durga Puja celebrations, where large pandals attract dense gatherings. The reporting so far centres on the sequence of events at the venue and the roles of the organisers and police in planning for the crowds.

With arrests made and hospital figures still being confirmed, further updates on the condition of the injured and the course of the investigation are expected.
