Loris Karius made a costly mistake inside his own penalty area and was later forced off injured as Schalke 04 lost 2-1 away to TSG Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Sunday, according to SPORT1. The goalkeeper's error handed the hosts an early lead, and the result leaves Schalke on six points in 17th place. Hoffenheim move up to ninth.

Why it matters

The defeat extends a difficult run of league results for Schalke, and it arrived in a manner the club could hardly have expected. Karius had been among the league's standout goalkeepers this season, with SPORT1 reporting that he had already been named player of the match five times, including a strong display against Bayern Munich on matchday two. Talk of a national team call-up had even circulated at one stage. Sunday's match turned that narrative sharply, and the injury that followed adds further uncertainty to Schalke's goalkeeping situation.

The mistake that opened the game

The error came in the 10th minute. After a one-two with Soufiane El-Faouzi, Karius received the ball inside his own box and initially kept it calmly at his feet. He then played it straight toward the advancing Fisnik Asllani, who only had to stick out a foot. The ball deflected off Asllani and looped over Karius into the net, putting the home side ahead.

It was a heavy blunder from a 33-year-old keeper who had been close to flawless this season, as SPORT1 noted in its report. Hoffenheim doubled their advantage shortly afterward, when Tim Lemperle finished a fine through ball from Asllani in the 26th minute. On that occasion Karius had no chance.

Injury and a fightback that fell short

Karius's afternoon got worse before it ended. Following a heavy collision with his own teammate Robin Gosens, he had to be substituted with an injury, and Gosens was also unable to continue. The match then turned into a genuine contest, with Schalke creating several good chances and pushing for a goal their performance arguably deserved. Junior Adamu was denied in the 72nd minute when Vladimir Coufal cleared his effort off the line.

Adamu was not to be stopped a second time. In the 81st minute he scored from close range to make it 2-1, becoming the first Schalke striker to find the net this season. Despite nine minutes of added time, Hoffenheim held on to their lead. T-Online reported that two players left the pitch injured.

Schalke remain 17th with six points, while Hoffenheim sit ninth after what sportschau.de described as a fortunate win. The club will now be watching Karius's fitness closely, with his availability for the coming fixtures the immediate question.
