The World Junior Grand Prix figure skating competition opened in Xi'an on Thursday, drawing more than 100 young athletes to the ancient Chinese capital, according to sanqin.com.

The event, which began on Aug. 20, brings together junior skaters from multiple countries to compete in the International Skating Union-sanctioned series. Sanqin.com reported that the competition is being held in Xi'an, a city better known for its Terracotta Warriors and historical landmarks than for winter sports.

The Junior Grand Prix serves as a key stepping stone for young figure skaters aiming to reach senior-level international competition. With over 100 participants, the Xi'an stop is one of the larger fields in the series, offering athletes valuable experience in a competitive international setting.

The opening day of the event saw skaters take to the ice for preliminary rounds, with the competition expected to continue over the coming days. The event also gives local fans a rare chance to watch high-level figure skating in person, as the sport remains relatively niche in the region.

As the competition progresses, attention will turn to which skaters deliver standout performances and secure valuable points toward qualifying for the Junior Grand Prix Final later in the season.
