A judge has told former National Signals Bureau director Kwabena Adu-Boahene and his wife to either appear in court with their lawyers or conduct cross-examination by themselves, according to Graphic Online. The order was issued on Tuesday, 11 August 2026.

The couple is facing proceedings where they have been without legal representation, the report states. The judge's instruction gives them a direct choice: secure counsel or handle the questioning of witnesses personally.

The case has drawn attention because of its timing during Ghana's legal vacation period. The Chief Justice has declined to postpone the Adu-Boahene and Hanan cases, yen.com.gh reports. This decision runs against the usual break in court activity.

Lawyer Maurice Ampaw has questioned the judge's order, asking "Why the rush?" according to GhanaWeb. He appears to challenge the speed at which the court is pushing the matter forward.

Separately, lawyer Atta Akyea has defended his own position, saying he is not being lazy but is following legal vacation rules, CitiNewsroom.com reports. Meanwhile, academic Kwame Srem-Sai has argued that the Ghana Bar Association's stance on legal vacation has no basis in law, according to Asaase Radio.

The legal vacation is a period when courts typically slow down or pause certain proceedings in Ghana. The Chief Justice's refusal to defer these cases suggests they are being treated as urgent exceptions.

What to watch next is whether Adu-Boahene and his wife manage to secure lawyers before the next hearing, or if they will be forced to conduct cross-examination themselves.
