The European Athletics Championships got underway in Birmingham on Monday, with Italy's top competitors taking to the track and field. According to Sky Sport, long jumper Mattia Furlani, sprinter Zaynab Dosso and shot putter Leonardo Fabbri were among the Italian athletes scheduled to compete on the opening day.

Furlani began his qualification round at 12:30 local time, as reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport. The championships are being held in the English city, with events spread across the day.

Dosso has set a clear target for the meet. Speaking to la Repubblica ahead of the competition, she said she came to Birmingham with the goal of running the 100 metres in under 11 seconds. That would mark a significant performance for the Italian sprinter.

The Italian federation, FIDAL, has framed the event as a key moment for its athletes. In a statement covered by www.fidal.it, the Italian squad said "this is our moment," signalling high expectations for the team's performance at the continental championships.

The event carries a particular weight for the athletes involved. Il Post noted that the European Championships offer a week that feels comparable to the Olympics, "more or less," given the concentration of high-level competition in a short window.

With qualification rounds underway on day one, attention now turns to whether Furlani, Dosso and Fabbri can advance to their respective finals and deliver on the team's stated ambitions. The next sessions will determine which Italian athletes progress to medal contention later in the week.
