Iranian state media has published a video showing Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, for the first time in five months, according to reports from Sky News Arabia and Al Arabiya.
The footage was released without a clear date or context, as CNN Arabic noted. The video marks the end of a prolonged period during which Mojtaba Khamenei had not appeared publicly, fueling speculation about his status and role.
Sky News Arabia reported the release on Sunday, August 9, 2026, describing it as the first video of Mojtaba Khamenei after his time out of the spotlight. Al Arabiya similarly characterized the footage as the first such video in five months.
The timing of the release has drawn attention because of ongoing questions about succession within Iran's leadership. Mojtaba Khamenei has long been considered a potential successor to his father, though no official announcement has been made.
Separately, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was quoted by the Tasnim news agency as saying that communication with the Supreme Leader is currently "very difficult." He also said he would not resign and that he is coordinating with military forces, according to the same outlet.
The combination of the video release and Pezeshkian's remarks has intensified scrutiny of Iran's internal political dynamics, though no official explanation has been offered for either development.
What to watch next: Whether Iranian officials provide additional context for the video or address the president's comments about difficulty in reaching the Supreme Leader.
