Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission will begin distributing Permanent Voter Cards on Thursday, Channels Television reports. The announcement comes as the country prepares for its 2027 general elections.
According to Channels Television, the commission is opening the collection process this week. Separate reports from Punch Newspapers and Premium Times Nigeria say Nigeria's voter register now stands at 103 million registered voters, a figure both outlets attribute to INEC.
The 2027 election cycle is already drawing political activity. Guardian Nigeria reports that party disputes, defections and consultations have emerged as leading issues as the 100-day countdown to the polls begins. Vanguard News also reports that INEC has warned politicians against violence, saying their ambitions are not worth the blood of Nigerians.
The PVC rollout is a logistical step ahead of the vote, since the cards are required for accreditation and voting on election day. The reported register size of 103 million makes it one of the largest voter rolls in the world, according to figures cited by Punch and Premium Times.
With the countdown underway, attention now turns to how smoothly the card collection process runs and whether registered voters actually pick up their PVCs before the elections.
