The legislative body of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) agreed to advance the agrarian reform bill to a plenary session for approval as law, detikNews reported on Monday, September 21, 2026.

The decision was made at a plenary meeting held to take a decision on the bill concerning the regulation of agrarian reform, according to ANTARA Foto. If passed at the plenary session, the bill would become a full law (UU).

The move drew attention from outside the legislature as well. Kompas.id reported that carrying out an agrarian reform law will require a democratic climate and public oversight. The Agrarian Reform Consortium (KPA), meanwhile, called for the bill to be enacted as a gift for National Farmers' Day 2026, according to kaltim.antaranews.com.

Ahead of the expected passage, Kompas.com reported that the DPR was urged not to slip deviating articles into the bill, with the outlet noting the legislation was set to be ratified the following day.

The bill's progress through the DPR has been tracked across several outlets, from the committee's decision to the calls from civil society groups for close public scrutiny of how the law is implemented once in force.

What to watch next: whether the plenary session approves the bill as expected, and how the final text addresses the concerns raised by advocacy groups.
