India’s central government has deployed a national outbreak response team to help manage a surge in Chandipura virus cases in Gujarat and Rajasthan, according to News On AIR.

The team, referred to as NJORT, has been sent as part of a multi-institutional investigation into the outbreak, the outlet reports. Health officials in Gujarat have also been placed on high alert following the rise in infections.

Chandipura virus is a mosquito-borne illness that has hit children particularly hard this monsoon season. The Hindu reports that 22 children have died from the virus in Gujarat alone during this period. India Today notes that doctors are highlighting why children appear to be more vulnerable to the infection, pointing to hidden risks that make younger populations more susceptible.

The deployment of the national team signals a coordinated effort to contain the spread and understand the current outbreak. The multi-institutional probe is expected to examine the patterns of transmission and the factors driving the higher case numbers in the affected states, as per News On AIR.

Local health machinery in Gujarat is already on alert, with authorities working to respond to the situation on the ground. The central response team’s arrival is meant to bolster these efforts and provide additional expertise.

What to watch next: The findings of the multi-institutional investigation, which could shape how the government responds to the outbreak in the coming weeks.
