A levee breach at Inba Marsh in Chiba Prefecture has caused severe damage to local agriculture and aquaculture, 読売新聞 reports. An eel farmer quoted by the paper said the stock is likely to be completely lost, while a rice grower whose family has farmed for four generations said closing the business is now something he has to consider.

According to 読売新聞, the flooding has dealt a heavy blow to both farming and fishing in the area. The report did not give figures for the losses.

The breach came as Typhoon No. 25 brought record rainfall to the region. テレビ朝日系(ANN)reported that 12 people had died in Chiba and Kanagawa prefectures, and that a team has been set up to restore power. NHKニュース reported that the flooded area at Inba Marsh overlaps with zones designated in official flood-risk maps, and urged residents to check hazard maps.

Damage has spread across other parts of the local farm and fisheries sector. テレ朝NEWS reported that roughly 100,000 ornamental koi escaped from a fish farm, with losses possibly reaching about 1 billion yen. 産経ニュース also reported koi being washed away just before they were due for sale, and said the storm's record rain has had wide-ranging effects on agriculture and fisheries. テレ朝NEWS added that it could take more than three months to restore service on the Uchibo Line.

What to watch next: whether authorities publish damage assessments for Inba Marsh and how quickly power and rail links in the affected areas are restored.
