The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has scaled up its relief operations for households affected by severe flooding in Ilocos Sur, according to Inquirer.net. The agency is moving additional food packs and essential supplies into the province to support families forced from their homes.

Inquirer.net reports that the DSWD’s stepped-up response comes as parts of the province remain under water following days of heavy rain. The exact number of affected families in Ilocos Sur was not specified in the report, but the agency is coordinating with local government units to ensure aid reaches the hardest-hit barangays.

The move is part of a broader government effort across the Philippines. The Manila Bulletin reported that more than 500 areas are still flooded due to the southwest monsoon, or “habagat,” and recent cyclones, with total government assistance now exceeding P1.1 billion. The Manila Times separately noted that the government has sent around P1 billion in aid to storm and monsoon victims nationwide.

In a separate operation, the Philippine News Agency said the DSWD has provided assistance to 583 families in a flood-hit town in Bulacan. That aid, delivered alongside local authorities, includes food and other basic necessities for those whose homes were damaged or inundated.

International coverage, including from The Peninsula Qatar, has highlighted the scale of the response, with the Philippines delivering roughly 17.6 million US dollars in aid to families affected by the heavy rains. The combined figures from these outlets indicate a sustained, multi-region relief push as weather conditions persist.

What to watch next: whether the DSWD expands its relief footprint to other flooded provinces as the monsoon season continues.
