Illinois is seeing a continued rise in cyclospora infections, and at least one health expert believes the official numbers do not reflect the full scope of the outbreak. The Daily Herald reports that cases in the state are climbing, with the expert advising residents to keep the parasite on their radar.

The expert told the Daily Herald that the actual number of infections is likely “much, much more than what’s been reported.” The comment suggests that surveillance and reporting may be lagging behind the true spread of the illness, which is caused by a microscopic parasite that can contaminate fresh produce.

Cyclospora infections have been a recurring concern in the U.S. in recent years. According to USA Today, cases of the parasite, which can cause severe gastrointestinal distress, have risen by thousands and have now been detected in 45 states. The parasite is typically contracted through contaminated food or water, and NPR notes that it works inside the gut after being ingested.

The current situation in Illinois is part of a broader pattern. Outbreaks have also been reported elsewhere, including a cluster in Johnson County that has grown to 143 cases, according to KCTV5. Despite the rise in infections, experts in that area have advised consumers to continue buying fresh produce, as the benefits of a healthy diet generally outweigh the risks.

Health officials in other states, such as Minnesota, have also fielded questions from the public about the parasite, indicating widespread concern. For Illinois residents, the immediate advice is to be aware of symptoms and to practice careful food handling, such as washing produce thoroughly.

As the case count continues to climb, the key question will be whether state and federal agencies can identify the source of the contamination and issue a recall. Until then, the expert’s warning suggests that the current numbers may only be the beginning.
