Kelechi Iheanacho has declined to discuss his future after extending his scoring run in Bursaspor's 2-0 win over Pendikspor on Monday, a result that carried the Nigerian to two separate places in the Turkish football record books.
The Super Eagles forward struck in the second half to reach 15 goals for the season and stretch his scoring streak to 11 matches in all competitions, according to SuperSportBet.
His latest goal made him the first Bursaspor player to find the net in nine consecutive matches, moving past Brazilian striker Fernandao, who managed eight in a row during the 2014-15 campaign.
Iheanacho also became the first player to score in ten successive league matches, SuperSportBet reports, overtaking Galatasaray great Metin Oktay, whose run reached nine games in 1962-63, and former Turkey international Saffet Sancaklı, who matched that figure in 1995-96.
Why it matters
The two records place Iheanacho in rare company in Turkish football and underline how central he has become to Bursaspor's push for promotion back to the Super Lig.
Breaking a league-wide mark that stood for more than six decades, and one shared by a Galatasaray legend, gives the achievement weight beyond his own club. For Bursaspor, a side working to return to the top flight, a striker scoring at this rate is the difference between a promotion challenge and a mid-table season.
The timing also matters. With the winter transfer window approaching, a player setting records in Turkey is certain to draw attention from elsewhere, and his club will have to manage that interest while keeping its leading scorer focused on the campaign.
Iheanacho keeps his focus on the present
Asked about the speculation surrounding his future, Iheanacho said he would not address it yet. "I am not going to say anything about the future until we can to the future," he said, according to Spor Bursa, as reported by All Nigeria Soccer.
He added that the team is concentrating on the current moment and on continuing to win, stay at the top of the table and score goals.
On the records themselves, the former Celtic forward said he had not been aware of the milestone until someone told him about it before last week's match. He said he was pleased and proud to have written his name into the record book in Turkey, describing it as no easy feat, and noted that the Pendikspor game had been difficult.
He also said he hopes more goals will follow for both himself and the team.
What to watch
Iheanacho will attempt to keep his run going as Bursaspor continue their promotion bid, with his form and any movement on his future both worth tracking when the transfer window opens.
