Hurricane Trudy weakened to Category 1 on Friday as the storm moved slowly along a path parallel to Mexico's Pacific coastline, according to EL PAÍS. The cyclone's downgrade came as authorities in several coastal states kept watch on its progress.
EL PAÍS reported the storm's shift in strength on Friday evening. UnoTV warned that Trudy, together with a cold front, is expected to bring heavy rain to parts of Mexico over the weekend.
Preparations along the coast were already under way. Beaches in Manzanillo, Tecomán and Armería were closed because of the hurricane, El Comentario reported. In Jalisco, the state's civil protection agency deployed an operation to monitor risks from the storm, according to La Jornada.
Earlier coverage pointed to a sharper threat. El Financiero had reported on the day Trudy was expected to come near the Jalisco coast at Category 4 strength, a forecast the storm has since fallen well short of.
The reporting available does not specify how close Trudy is expected to pass to the coastline, or which areas face the greatest risk from rainfall.
What to watch next: whether Trudy continues to lose strength or changes course, and how the combined rain from the storm and the cold front affects Mexico over the weekend.
