A suspected gang leader in Homa Bay is set to be charged with robbery with violence at Kisii Law Courts, police have said, following his arrest last week.

The Star, Kenya reports that a Homa Bay court on Friday directed that he be transferred to Kisii for plea taking on October 12, citing security concerns. The suspect was arrested alongside eight others during an operation on Thursday night.

The arrest triggered unrest in the town, prompting anti-riot police to move in and restore calm. Police said at least 19 additional suspects were arrested over the weekend as operations continued.

Why it matters

The case has drawn attention to the suspected activities of a group identified in reports as the Hammer Boys, and to wider concerns about organised political violence in Homa Bay. The Star, Kenya reports that the suspect is alleged to have close ties to senior political and government officials from the area.

The arrest also follows deadly clashes that left at least ten people dead, among them a police officer, while many others suffered injuries from pangas. Vehicles were damaged and journalists were attacked while covering a rally, according to The Star, Kenya.

Eight suspects remanded as investigations continue

The eight suspects arrested while officers executed an arrest warrant against the gang leader were presented before Homa Bay Law Courts. The court ordered that they be held at Oyugis police station for seven days to allow investigators to continue their inquiries, according to The Star, Kenya.

The warrant was issued in connection with Criminal Case No. E300/2026, referenced under CR 617/142/2026, by the Chief Magistrate's Court in Homa Bay. The Star, Kenya reports that the eight men allegedly obstructed officers as they attempted to carry out the arrest, which led to their detention.

The operation was conducted by officers from Homa Bay police station alongside detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, under the command of County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem.

The gang leader had been wanted for assault causing actual bodily harm, contrary to Section 251 of the Penal Code. He has also been linked to a series of robberies and assault cases in the area, according to The Star, Kenya.

Police had previously said he was central to investigations into the deadly chaos in Homa Bay when the Linda Mwananchi team visited the area. He had been ordered to surrender to the DCI at the Homa Bay County headquarters to assist with investigations into the unrest.

Political scrutiny intensifies

The developments have renewed focus on the identity and alleged activities of the group amid heightened scrutiny over organised political violence in the region, The Star, Kenya reports.

Coverage of the arrest and its aftermath has been carried by several Kenyan outlets. The Standard reported on the arrest of Abi Sebo and the chaos that followed in Homa Bay. Kenyans.co.ke reported protests after detectives allegedly arrested a suspected goon leader. People Daily reported that Ruth Odinga warned that Homa Bay goons could spiral out of control. Citizen Digital reported that 40 people were arrested in a Homa Bay goon crackdown.

The investigations remain ongoing, with the eight suspects in custody for the seven-day period authorised by the court.

What happens next will turn on the plea in Kisii and whether the wider crackdown produces further charges.
