Portugal saw a 265% rise in hepatitis A cases during 2025, driven by several outbreaks, according to Jornal de Notícias. The increase marks a significant public health concern, as the disease can be potentially fatal.
The surge comes amid contrasting progress in treating other forms of hepatitis. Diário de Notícias reports that while hepatitis C cure rates have reached 97%, with over 22,000 patients cured in the past decade, hepatitis A outbreaks have reversed some gains in disease control. Público also highlighted the success of hepatitis C treatment, noting the high cure rate over ten years.
RTP confirmed the sharp rise in hepatitis A cases, attributing it to outbreak clusters. The outbreaks have drawn attention to gaps in prevention and vaccination efforts, as hepatitis A is typically transmitted through contaminated food or water and close contact.

Health authorities are now expected to focus on containing the outbreaks and reinforcing vaccination campaigns to prevent further spread.
