Health experts are warning people in the UK to protect their eyes during the upcoming solar eclipse, and they recommend using a common kitchen tool: a colander, according to The Irish Sun.
The Irish Sun reports that looking directly at the sun during an eclipse can cause permanent eye damage. Experts say a colander with small holes can act as a simple pinhole projector, allowing viewers to see the eclipse's shadow safely on the ground.
The method works by holding the colander above a flat surface, such as paper or pavement. The small holes project multiple images of the crescent sun. This avoids the need for special eclipse glasses, which can be scarce or counterfeit.

The solar eclipse is expected to be visible across parts of the UK. The European Space Agency is also hosting a viewing event for the total solar eclipse in León, Spain. Meanwhile, eclipse chasers in Spain may face weather-related challenges, Forbes reports.
For those unable to travel, the colander trick offers a safe, low-cost way to observe the event at home.
