Olympique de Marseille hosted Toulouse on Sunday evening in the final fixture of Ligue 1's ninth matchday, and the home side had moved into a 2-0 lead through Amine Harit and Amine Gouiri, according to RMC Sport's live coverage. The match at the Vélodrome drew an expected crowd of 39,000, with the north stand closed for a second consecutive game.

Marseille went in front almost immediately. RMC Sport reported that the home side won the ball high after a risky goal kick from Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes. Gouiri, given time on the ball, laid it off to Harit, who finished with a subtle outside-of-the-foot strike that beat Restes, the keeper left badly positioned.

The lead doubled after another Toulouse error in build-up play. RMC Sport described Paixao heading the ball to Gouiri, who controlled it, held off the visiting centre-backs and placed a shot into the near corner. The goal made it 2-0 to Marseille.

Why it matters

The result matters at both ends of the table. Marseille, coached by Bruno Genesio, came into the game on three straight league wins and were chasing a fourth to climb the standings, according to Le Figaro and 20 Minutes. Toulouse arrived unbeaten in their last five matches under Jens Berthel Askou, though they had been held to a goalless draw at home by Troyes in their previous outing.

There was also recent history between the clubs. RMC Sport noted that Toulouse drew 2-2 at the Vélodrome in the league last season and later knocked Marseille out of the Coupe de France in the quarter-finals on penalties after another 2-2 draw, giving the hosts a motive to respond.

Toulouse respond after a slow start

The visitors struggled early but grew into the half. RMC Sport reported that Toulouse began pressing Marseille's defence and forcing errors, with goalkeeper De Lange sending one clearance straight into touch. Niko Sigur had a shot blocked by Hojbjerg as the Violets pushed into the opposition half.

Toulouse came close to pulling one back. RMC Sport described a good cross from Casper Tengstedt that Russell-Rowe could not convert first time, before the Canadian pulled the ball back for Jorgensen, whose firm strike was kept out by De Lange. From the following move, Tengstedt's effort was headed clear by Nnadi.

Russell-Rowe also curled a shot at De Lange from the right corner of the box, but it lacked the power to trouble the keeper. At the other end, Timothy Weah fired wide for Marseille after being slightly unbalanced by Donnum, and Harit set up Nayef Aguerd with a cross that the Moroccan headed off target. Harit also had a tangle with Cristian Casseres, who stopped him with a firm tackle near the touchline.

The backdrop to the night

Marseille's run of form has not erased doubts about their season. RMC Sport noted that after a poor start the club had steadied with three consecutive wins, but their 4-3 victory over Le Havre, in which they conceded three goals in under half an hour, showed the team remains fragile. Former player Jérôme Rothen was quoted by RMC Sport saying the winning streak was only a fragile rebound for a side he does not believe is focused on a top-six finish.

Genesio, meanwhile, addressed his use of academy players, telling reporters he would not be swayed by what he called lobbying over the promotion of young talent, according to RMC Sport. He insisted the decisions on selection remain his own.

Toulouse's record at the Vélodrome in Ligue 1 offered little encouragement before kick-off. RMC Sport noted the club had not won there in the league since 2012, when a goal from Aymen Abdennour secured a 1-0 victory. Tengstedt, signed late in the summer window, arrived in strong form with five goals already and was closely watched on the night.

Marseille lined up with De Lange in goal behind Weah, Egan-Riley, Aguerd and Emerson, with Nnadi, Hojbjerg and Harit in midfield, Abdelli ahead of them and Paixao alongside Gouiri up front. Toulouse started Restes in goal, with Diallo, McKenzie, Nicolaisen and Tapé in defence, Donnum, Casseres, Sigur and Jorgensen across midfield, and Tengstedt partnered by Russell-Rowe in attack.

The next question is whether Toulouse's improved spell turns into a goal, or whether Marseille hold on and complete a fourth straight league win.
