The Hanshin Tigers have won the Central League pennant for a second consecutive season, the first back-to-back titles in the franchise's history under the two-league system, according to Yahoo!ニュース. The club held off the Yomiuri Giants in a tight race that went down to the wire.

Yahoo!ニュース reports that Hanshin's season was disrupted by serious injuries. Ishii suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, and Chikamoto played through a broken bone. The Tigers overcame both absences to stay ahead of the Giants in the standings.

The title is Hanshin's first repeat championship in 88 years, dating back to the single-league era, per Yahoo!ニュース. Manager Fujikawa Koji, a former pitcher, has now won the league in each of his first two seasons at the helm — a first for a manager who came to the job from a pitching background, the outlet reports.

The race was decided in part by the Giants' failure to convert scoring chances. 時事ドットコム reported that Yomiuri left opportunities on the board in a losing effort, pushing a comeback title out of reach.

The championship set off celebrations across the Kansai region. 毎日新聞 reported that Osaka prefectural police tightened security around Dotonbori to prevent accidents during the festivities. Broadcasters also moved quickly: GAORA announced a nationwide simultaneous airing of an MBS championship special, and オリコンニュース reported that other Kansai television stations had prepared their own programs ahead of the clinch.

With the league title secured, attention now turns to the postseason, where Hanshin will look to convert its second straight pennant into a Japan Series championship.
