The Hanshin Tigers defeated the Yomiuri Giants with a dramatic walk-off victory on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, according to 日刊スポーツ. Trailing in the bottom of the ninth inning, Hanshin's Teruaki Sato and Yusuke Oyama hit consecutive home runs to seal the game.
The win extended Hanshin's lead over second-place Yomiuri to three games in the Central League standings, the largest gap between the two clubs this season, as reported by Yahoo! News.
Manager Kyuji Fujikawa credited the team's cohesion for the dramatic finish, per Yahoo! News. He noted that the Tigers could see their magic number for the pennant appear as early as August 20, according to the same report.
For Oyama, this marked his fourth career walk-off home run, as detailed by topics.smt.docomo.ne.jp. In comments following the game, Oyama acknowledged Sato's earlier blast, saying he always watches Sato hit incredible home runs right in front of him, per the report.
The sequence unfolded quickly: Sato tied the game with his solo shot, and Oyama followed immediately with another to end it. Video of the decisive home run was shared by 日刊スポーツ, which described the ending as one that could not have been scripted better.
The Tigers now hold a three-game cushion over the Giants with the season entering its final stretch. The team is positioned to potentially clinch the league title if they maintain their current form.
What to watch next: Whether Hanshin can keep its momentum and officially trigger the magic number when play resumes on August 20.
