A 23-year-old man held on suspicion of murdering Hajar, a 29-year-old woman found dead in Amsterdam, was arrested in the village of Spierdijk after attacking his foster father with a hammer, De Telegraaf reports. The suspect, identified in Dutch media as Abdi, is said to have also smashed windows at the homes of his foster parents.
According to De Telegraaf, the foster father was badly injured in the assault, with the newspaper describing him as "aardig toegetakeld" — roughly, considerably battered. RTL.nl reports that the arrest took place at the foster father's address in Spierdijk.
Het Parool reports that residents said the suspect had not been in the area for around four years before the incident. Noordhollands Dagblad describes the village as shaken by both the hammer violence and the arrest linked to the Hajar murder case.
NOS reported earlier that a 23-year-old man had been detained in connection with the death of Hajar, who was found dead in Amsterdam. The reports do not specify what charges beyond the murder suspicion the suspect faces, and no further details on his motives or the condition of the injured man have been given in the material available.
Dutch police have not commented publicly on the sequence of events in Spierdijk beyond confirming the arrest, according to the reporting. It is not clear from the coverage when the suspect will appear before a magistrate.
Watch for updates from Dutch prosecutors on the suspect's detention and any link between the Spierdijk incident and the Hajar investigation.
