Three great white sharks, each reported to be about four metres long, were seen circling a dead whale that washed ashore on a Perth beach, according to WAtoday. PerthNow reports that officials are still working out how to deal with the carcass.

The sharks were spotted in the water off the beach after the whale came ashore, ABC reported. The scene drew onlookers, with The Guardian noting that some people took selfies while others covered their noses because of the smell.

PerthNow also published video described as showing a shark just metres from a crowded beach, underscoring how close the animals came to shore.

The reports do not specify exactly which Perth beach was involved, how the whale died, or what steps authorities have decided on. A whale carcass in the water is a known attractant for sharks, which is why such strandings typically prompt beach safety warnings.

What to watch next: whether officials confirm a beach closure or a plan to remove the carcass, and whether any further shark sightings are reported in the area.
