The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s GoldBod initiative is essentially a copy of a plan previously proposed by the New Patriotic Party (NPP), but its implementation has fallen short, according to Mike Ocquaye Jr.

Ocquaye Jr made the remarks in a statement reported by Modern Ghana on Thursday, 20 August 2026. He argued that while the policy idea is not new, the current administration has failed to deliver on it effectively.

Modern Ghana reports that Ocquaye Jr’s comments directly compare the two parties’ approaches to the gold trading body. He did not provide specific details on what aspects of the implementation have failed, but his criticism centres on the execution rather than the concept itself.

The GoldBod was introduced by the NDC government as a state-backed entity to regulate and boost gold trading in the country. However, according to Ocquaye Jr, the plan mirrors what the NPP had already put forward during its time in office.

The claim adds to ongoing political debate over which party first proposed the idea and who is better positioned to manage the country’s gold sector. Ocquaye Jr’s remarks suggest that the NDC has not improved on the original blueprint, despite having the advantage of learning from the NPP’s prior work.

Observers will be watching whether the government responds to the criticism and whether any adjustments are made to the GoldBod’s operations in the coming months.
