Ghana’s national security apparatus has detected a shift in how vigilante groups operate, with these organizations now relying on covert networks and encrypted messaging platforms to coordinate their activities, according to a report by Modern Ghana published on Tuesday.

The report indicates that security officials have identified new mobilization methods, moving away from open calls to more discreet digital channels. This change makes it harder for authorities to track planned actions in advance, the outlet said.

Modern Ghana’s coverage points to a broader concern: vigilante groups are adopting new names and internal codes to evade detection. GhanaWeb, in a separate report on the same development, said security agencies have cracked some of these new “codes,” suggesting that monitoring efforts are ongoing but that the groups are actively adapting their tactics.

The reporting also includes commentary from security and governance experts. Col. Festus Aboagye (Rtd), speaking to Asaase Radio, argued that the failure to prosecute political violence is fundamentally a political problem rather than a purely legal one. His remarks imply that without political will to hold offenders accountable, legal measures alone will not curb the trend.

In a related interview with News Ghana, a police officer identified as Cop Abdul-razak urged the country not to regress on this issue, calling on Ghanaians to confront political violence directly. Meanwhile, 3News reported that security and political governance experts are now calling for reforms to make Ghana’s vigilantism Act more effective in practice.

These reports collectively suggest that while the government has acknowledged the threat, enforcement and legislative gaps remain. The next step will likely be whether Parliament moves to amend the existing law in response to the new digital tactics.
