Ghana's National Council for Tertiary Education (GTEC) has ordered senior administrators at public universities to end their strike and return to work immediately. The regulator has also given vice-chancellors a 48-hour deadline to identify any staff members who refuse to comply, according to Graphic Online.

The order follows an ongoing industrial action by the Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA), which has disrupted operations at several public universities. GTEC's directive applies to senior management officials across all public institutions, and the 48-hour window for naming defiers signals a firm stance against continued non-compliance.

The strike has already had tangible consequences. According to GhanaWeb, the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and other public universities have suspended examinations as a result of the administrators' withdrawal of services. Asaase Radio has reported that the action has also raised questions about the credibility of university exams, as administrative support crucial to the examination process has been withdrawn.

The dispute centers on the administrators' decision to withhold their labor, a move that has forced institutions to halt academic activities. GTEC's intervention now places the onus on vice-chancellors to enforce the return-to-work order or face having to name those who defy it.

What to watch next is whether the 48-hour deadline produces a list of names and whether that escalates the standoff between GTEC and GAUA.
